Predicting The Great Lakes Wetlands' Resilience to Climate Change in Response to Phragmites australis subsp. australis Removal

چکیده

Phragmites australis subsp. (hereon Phargmites), has become a dominating threat to the Great Lakes wetlands at time when climate change pressures are also compromising integrity of native habitat. Understanding role this invader plays in resiliency is crucial order improve management decisions protect and restore wetlands. This literature review was conducted predict if wetland’s effects could absence Phragmites. Peer-reviewed articles were analyzed determine overall impact on by drawing connections between study findings how may influence ability mitigate change. Evaluation invasion impacts included floral faunal species diversity, richness composition, methane carbon emissions, nutrient availability, water levels quality. examination studies showed floral, avian, turtle diversity be negatively related invasion, with no clear frogs macroinvertebrates. Studies that Phragmites-dominated increased sequestration, but emissions which greater radiative forcing power, resulting net source greenhouse gases. Soil availability found impacted invader, quality inconclusive due insufficient available evidence. Overall, information provides indication benefit from removal, likely enhancing resist effects.

Freshwater wetlands: fertile grounds for the invasive Phragmites australis in a climate change context

Climate change will likely affect flooding regimes, which have a large influence on the functioning of freshwater riparian wetlands. Low water levels predicted for several fluvial systems make wetlands especially vulnerable to the spread of invaders, such as the common reed (Phragmites australis), one of the most invasive species in North America. We developed a model to map the distribution of...

Rapid Invasion of a Great Lakes Coastal Wetland by Non-native Phragmites australis and Typha

Great Lakes coastal wetlands are subject to water level fluctuations that promote the maintenance of coastal wetlands. Point au Sauble, a Green Bay coastal wetland, was an open water lagoon as of 1999, but became entirely vegetated as Lake Michigan experienced a prolonged period of below-average water levels. Repeat visits in 2001 and 2004 documented a dramatic change in emergent wetland vegeta...

Detoxification of herbicides in Phragmites australis.

Unintentional loss of herbicides into drainage ditches, shores or other waterbodies may cause large problems in farmland. Therefore strategies for the phytoremediation of agrochemicals and especially herbicides have become a topic of great interest in many agricultural areas. However, in order to establish effective biological pollution control, information on the detoxification capacity of rip...

Tolerance and physiological responses of Phragmites australis to water deficit

The water stress tolerance of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin ex. Steud. grown in the laboratory were investigated by examining effects of different levels of imposed water deficits on growth, photosynthesis and various physiological traits related to water stress. Individual plants were grown under conditions of unrestricted water supply and compared with groups of plants receiving 60, 30, 15...
